Somatic Therapy for Black Women & Women of Color in
Davie, FL
Why Somatic Work Supports Trauma Recovery in BIPOC Communities
Sometimes your body knows things your mind hasn’t put into words yet.
If you've ever felt disconnected from yourself, emotionally overwhelmed, or stuck in survival mode, you’re not alone. Somatic therapy offers a different way to heal: one that helps you feel safe in your body and reclaim the parts of yourself that trauma or stress tried to silence.
At Human Freely, we use somatic therapy to support Millennial Women of Color who carry the weight of past experiences in both their thoughts and their bodies. At the same time, my practice also supports teens, adults, and older adults who are seeking somatic, trauma-informed psychotherapy rooted in nervous system regulation and mind–body healing.
somatic therapy can help you feel safe in your skin again.
-
Somatic psychotherapy is a mind–body approach that recognizes how stress, trauma, and chronic activation are stored in the nervous system—not just in thoughts or memories.
Rather than focusing solely on talking through experiences, somatic work supports bottom-up healing, helping the body regain a sense of safety, regulation, and capacity.
This approach can be especially supportive for individuals who:
feel overwhelmed or shut down in traditional talk therapy
experience anxiety, dissociation, or emotional flooding
intellectually understand their experiences but struggle to integrate change
have a history of trauma or prolonged stress
-
Each session is guided by your comfort, your pace, and your goals.
You might start with talking, then slowly shift into noticing body sensations, breath patterns, or where tension lives.
You’ll never be pushed—this is a space to explore, reconnect, and heal on your terms.
-
Somatic therapy can help you feel more grounded, calm, and in control.
It supports emotional regulation, body awareness, and the release of long-held stress patterns.
Over time, it can help you rebuild trust in yourself—and feel safe in your body again.
-
In somatic psychotherapy, we gently attend to physical sensations, breath, movement, and emotional cues—always at a pace that prioritizes safety and choice.
Over time, clients often experience:
improved nervous system regulation
increased tolerance for emotional experiences
reduced reactivity or shutdown
a stronger sense of connection to their body
This foundation allows for deeper therapeutic work without overwhelming the system.
Ultimately, what matters most is this:
Here, your body’s wisdom is welcomed.
Is somatic therapy right for you?
Somatic therapy is a good fit for you if you…
Feel disconnected from your body or emotions, even if things look “fine” on the outside.
Often find yourself in fight, flight, freeze, or shut down—even when you don’t know why.
Carry tension, fatigue, or restlessness that doesn’t go away, no matter how much you rest.
Struggle to name or explain what you’re feeling, but you know something isn’t right.
Want a gentle, non-judgmental space to explore your healing—without needing to have all the words.
Are ready to try something different because talking hasn’t been enough on its own.
What we’ll work on
With Somatic therapy, you can…
Notice and regulate nervous system states like fight, flight, or freeze
Release stored tension, trauma, and chronic stress from the body
Build body-based coping tools that help you feel safe and centered
Increase emotional awareness and self-compassion
Feel more present in your relationships and everyday life
Reclaim your body as a place of safety and power
If any of this resonates, somatic therapy may be the missing piece you’ve been searching for
Somatic Psychotherapy as EMDR Preparation or Integration
Somatic psychotherapy is often used to support clients before, during, or after trauma-focused treatments, including EMDR.
By strengthening regulation and resourcing, this work can help clients build the capacity needed for trauma processing, particularly if prior attempts felt destabilizing or too intense.
It is also commonly helpful for individuals transitioning out of higher levels of care, such as residential treatment, PHP, or IOP, where therapy may have focused primarily on CBT, DBT, or talk-based approaches.
Step into a new kind of care that listens deeply, meets you fully, and holds space for all of you.

FAQs
-
Somatic therapy focuses on how emotions and trauma show up in the body—not just the mind. We use gentle movement, breathwork, grounding, and other body-based techniques to help you feel more safe, present, and in control. It complements traditional talk therapy or can stand alone as its own healing path.
-
Not at all. Somatic therapy is not about exercise or stretching—it’s about noticing and working with sensations, breath, and energy at a pace that feels safe for you. There’s no pressure, no performance—just permission to be fully you.
-
That’s actually one of the most common reasons people come to somatic therapy. Together, we’ll gently rebuild your body awareness in ways that feel supportive, not overwhelming.
